Significant environmental benefits

Saving gypsum material

By addressing every aspect of waste, British Gypsum has succeeded in operating in a manner that increases its contribution to sustainable development through a commitment to improve its environmental performance.

An awarded initiative

The Plasterboard Recycling Service has been recognised by many customers as a key part of their Environmental and Sustainability strategy. Taylor Woodrow and AMEC awarded British Gypsum their sustainability award in recognition of its approach.

A significant environmental impact

The annual intake of plasterboard waste from customers has increased over 40% per annum year on year. The Plasterboard Recycling Service achieves a substantial and rapidly growing improvement to the environmental impact of the construction industry.

An alternative to mineral extraction

In the UK there is insufficient supply of 'synthetic' gypsum. Normally that shortfall is made up by mining gypsum in the UK or importing mined gypsum from elsewhere in Europe. For the foreseeable future, every tonne of recycled gypsum saves one tonne of mined material being extracted. While gypsum mining is well established on a professional and environmentally sound basis, recycling optimises the use of limited natural resources and extends the life of mineral reserves.
