ACQUISITION OF GS ROOFING COMPANY

The Building Materials Division of the Saint-Gobain Group announces the acquisition of the American company GS Roofing specialised in the production of asphalt shingles used in the residential roofing market in North America.
GS Roofing, which employs 800 people, had 1998 net sales of approximately USD 250 million.
The Saint-Gobain Group, through its affiliate CertainTeed, produces and sells asphalt shingles in the East Coast as well as in the north of the United States of America. The acquisition of GS Roofing is geographically perfectly complementary for CertainTeed. It allows CertainTeed, with its plants located in the West Coast and in the south of the United States of America, to become n°3 in the American roofing market.
The Saint-Gobain Building Materials Division's 1998 sales amounted to FRF 14.6 billion. It covers six family products which intervene in the construction business and in the renovation market in more than 15 countries.
