Rooftop of Germany

Vetrotech supplied the glazing for a panoramic platform located at an altitude of nearly 3,000 meters. A unique architectural project in terms of transporting the materials to the top of Germany’s highest mountain and the choice of solutions to ensure visitors’ safety and comfort.

Rising to 2,962 meters, the Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany, offering an exceptional view of the Bavarian and Austrian Alps. In order to fully enjoy this landscape, the panoramic platform allowing visitors to reach the summit has been completely renovated.

Vetrotech solutions were chosen to glaze this new space, which also houses a restaurant. More than 175m2 of Contraflam, a high-security, fire-resistant glass, was installed in the doors, stairs and windows. This high-performance glazing was essential to ensure the safety of the hundreds of people expected every day while allowing them to enjoy the outside view. In addition to its fire-resistant characteristics, Contraflam is made of tempered safety glass with excellent shock resistance, thus offering better resistance in case of impact or accidental fall.

Another challenge for this unprecedented project was to transport the materials to an altitude of almost 3,000 meters. To achieve this, the materials had to be hoisted by cables to the summit! A risky challenge, but one that was successfully met!
