Accounting for almost 70% of the Group’s sales, Habitat is Saint-Gobain’s main market. With a unique and diversified portfolio of materials and services that improve the energy efficiency and thermal, acoustic, visual and health comfort of buildings, Saint-Gobain provides solutions for the external envelope (roofs, facade coatings, external insulation systems, insulating glazing, etc.) and the internal lining (insulation, plasterboard, ceilings, etc.). They are used in all types of residential renovation projects (single and multi-unit dwellings).

The new and renovation residential habitat market is the Group’s core business, as it accounts for more than half of Saint-Gobain’s sales and 75% of habitat sales. Saint-Gobain provides its customers with its industrial expertise to develop, manufacture and sell a broad range of building materials designed to improve the acoustic, thermal, health, etc., comfort of single and multi-unit dwellings, while at the same time incorporating energy efficiency, functional and aesthetic qualities as illustrated by the Multi-Comfort program.

Saint-Gobain’s extensive network of general and specialist distribution brands provides a vast palette of products and services for various types of customers with new construction or, in particular, renovation projects: artisans; small, medium and large building contractors; and homeowners. Each brand, embedded in its local market, meets the specific needs of its customers and market. This organization, together with the dynamism and expertise of our teams, gives us a real edge when it comes to meeting the diversity of customer expectations in terms of products as well as services and solutions (training centers, practical guides, drive-throughs to collect online orders, display spaces, etc.).

Numerous challenges must be faced when renovating buildings: energy performance, health, accessibility, acoustic and thermal comfort, and lastly environmental protection. Rapidly accelerating urbanization in high-growth-rate countries and the aging stock of existing buildings demand an increased renovation effort for the oldest buildings.

The residential habitat market represents a significant mid- to long-term growth potential for the Group, driven by favorable underlying trends in both mature and emerging economies:

  • In mature economies, the looming shortage of fossil fuels and the pressing need to reduce CO2 emissions have prompted countries to tighten thermal performance and energy efficiency requirements, as a result regulations are moving in the direction of greater energy efficiency,
  • In fast-growth-rate economies, markets are driven by rapidly accelerating urban development and massive growth in demand for housing.

Single dwellings: dry construction solutions in Brazil

Saint-Gobain has launched a dry construction system in Brazil. Using Brasilit, Placo, Isover and Weber products, this system requires no water on the construction site. Suitable for all types of construction, it was used for the first time for a housing project in Ponta Grossa, Paraná state.

Encourage the energy transition

Improving the energy efficiency of buildings is the number one source of energy savings. As a result, the energy transition may deliver significant growth and employment. While the focus must be on the thermal renovation of existing buildings, its implementation must be pragmatic and take account of the main market segments, namely, single dwellings and multi-unit housing.

Labels to support responsible renovation 

Saint-Gobain supports voluntary certification for buildings based on labels such as HQE™, LEED® or BREEAM. The goal is to promote housing that is more environmentally friendly, comfortable and cost-effective as well as healthier, in particular due to improved energy performance. These best practices allow the Group to innovate and provide value added solutions to the market leaders. 

Certifications guide property developers and builders in designing and marketing their projects. Saint-Gobain is responding to a growing demand for guaranteed building performance around the world. Supporting certification is a key factor in promoting Saint-Gobain’s products and solutions.
