Exceptional tour of the athletes’ Village

An architectural feat and a showcase for the Group’s expertise, the athletes’ Village is the centerpiece of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Members of the Saint-Gobain Executive Committee were treated to an exceptional guided tour of this open-air laboratory for sustainable construction.

Visite d’exception au Village des Athlètes

With 100 days to go until the start of the Paris 2024 Games, members of the Group’s Executive Committee visited the athletes’ Village. This comprises 30 buildings, spread over three towns in Seine-Saint-Denis, and built in just six years! From July, it will host 14,500 athletes and their teams during the Olympic Games, and then 9,000 athletes and their sporting delegations during the Paralympic Games.

With a focus on innovation and sustainable construction, the tour, led by Laurent Michaud (Village Director) and Nicolas Ferrand (CEO of Solideo), was also an opportunity to see first-hand the achievements made possible by Saint-Gobain solutions.

With a view to circularity, the interior plaster partitions of the Village buildings were specially designed by Placo® teams, so that they can be dismantled and most of the materials reused. The teams at Weber worked with the timber industry to provide an innovative external thermal insulation system for the wooden facades on the 28-meter-high buildings. And POINT.P delivered building materials from Weber’s Bonneuil-sur-Marne site by barge, taking an environmentally friendly route.

Accompanied by footballer Julie Dufour and Saint-Gobain Team mentor Luc Abalo, members of the Executive Committee were also able to climb to the top of the Signal Tower and admire the spectacular view over Paris. This gave them a close-up view of the exceptional stained-glass windows created in the Saultain plant with the expertise of the Saint-Gobain Glass teams.
