Pari Plâtre : l’économie circulaire en circuit court
In France, Placo® and Serfim Recyclage are starting up a new recycling workshop called Pari Plâtre. The site uses plaster waste to produce ever lighter and more sustainable products helping support a virtuous, local economy.
It all starts with the waste. Collected daily by the Placo® Recycling network from construction sites within a 250 km radius of the site, the plaster pieces are delivered to the 80-metre line of the new Pari Plâtre site in Quincy-Voisins, near Paris (France).
Operational since October 2021, this 4,000 m2 facility is the first in the Paris region to be entirely used for recycling plaster waste from construction sites. It is the result of the dedication of two partners: Serfim Recyclage and Placo®, which have been committed to a circular economy approach for 15 years.
Two employees sort the waste is sorted by hand. Wood or ceramic remains are then removed, before the plaster is crushed and screened. On the one hand, there is cardboard and polystyrene, which are fed to their own recycling channels, and on the other, gypsum, which is stored on site in two huge 80 m3 silos.
The employees sort an average of 20 metric tons of waste per hour, i.e., 140 metric tons per day or 700 metric tons per week. The recovered gypsum is fed back into the plasterboard production cycle as a secondary raw material. With a recovery rate of 98%, this waste has become a resource. It is delivered to the Placo® plant in Vaujours. Short circuit recycling is guaranteed, as the two sites are just 33 kilometers apart.
Placo® is the leading recycler of gypsum in France, and alone recycles more than half of the country's gypsum waste. But it aims to do even better. With the intensification made possible by Pari Plâtre, the target for 2030 is to recycle 200,000 metric tons of plaster, i.e., 4 times more than in 2020. This will also allow the brand to incorporate up to 30% of recycled material in the manufacture of all its plasterboards.
This virtuous partnership ties in with Placo®'s commitment to examining each stage in the life cycle of its products with a view to continuously reducing their environmental impact
