Saint-Gobain Finland's innovative new slag processing plant promotes the circular economy in the construction sector
This new plant is part of Saint-Gobain's goal to accelerate the transition of the entire sector towards low-carbon construction, both in Finland and internationally.
Saint-Gobain's new slag processing plant in Raahe uses slag from SSAB's steel production as a binder in cement-based building materials. Slag from the steel production process is processed at the new plant, where the slag and metals are separated.
The plant processes around 70,000 tons of slag per year, two-thirds of which is recycled as metal and reintroduced into SSAB's production raw materials. The rest is transformed into alternative binders that can replace special cements, particularly in Saint-Gobain's Weber brand dry products.
Slag processing makes it possible to replace up to 70% of the cement in the new Enaé screeds, which will soon be launched in Finland and Sweden. This new solution reduces CO₂ emissions by around 30-50% over the entire product life cycle.
